Recommendations on Running a Foodmachine Event
Over the past 3 years we heard several suggestions on how to make your foodmachine event as enjoyable and successful as possible. Here are a few tips on how to do so:
- Advertise early: This gives your players a chance to accumulate a number of canned food items. They can even talk with their family and friends to increase their potential donation. By advertising early you can often also involve the media. Use the media package to contact your local papers, radio stations, podcasts, and news stations.
- Contact a food bank early: It is important to contact a local food bank as early as you can. All local pantries are happy to receive donations but the number of canned food items a Foodmachine event can generate can sometimes be overwhelming for the current staff at these pantries. Notify a pantry early that you would like to make a donation to them through foodmachine. Establish a time to drop off the food items. In some cases, when notified early enough, the food pantry can provide containers to hold the food and will even pick it up themselves.
- Use tickets or tokens: When people register, have them turn in their canned food tiems for tokens or tickets they can use for their rerolls, extra focus, etc. throughout the day. This is much easier than lugging around 50 cans of baked beans.
- Keep up the donations: Most people show up to a foodmachine event with a set number of donations. However, during the course of the day they see their tokens begin to wane and want to obtain more. Give periodic breaks during the competition for people to run out and grab additional items from Aldi or another local supermarket if they wish.
